What Do We Stand For?

To Be Honest:

Far too often, Christians are only known for what we are “against.” The unfortunate caricature comes to mind: an old white guy in a suit – spitting, sweating, screaming – Bible in one hand and his crooked finger pointed at sinners on their way to hell. This guy is “preaching” against the cultural sinfulness of the day: drinking, smoking, pre-marital sex, liberals, materialism, abortion, the government, tattoos, transgender bathrooms, gambling, porn, drugs, short skirts, dancing, sex-trafficking, rated R-Movies, socialism, anything other than the King James Bible, The FaceBook, progressives, crude humor, communists, nose rings, income inequality, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, anti-guns laws, cussing, refugees, strip clubs, flag burning, rap music, chewing tobacco, globalism, The Pope, public schools, Muslims, political correctness, protestors, vaccines, homosexuals, Fifty Shades of Grey, taxes, the fake media, and of course how America has moved from Christian values.

Some of these are obviously sinful according to Scripture (including but not limited to pre-marital sex, abortion, strip clubs, porn, etc) and some by implication can fall into that category as well. Many of these are lamentable. But some are simply an easy target to rail against when the preacher has nothing else to say, in my opinion. Far too often preachers are guilty of preaching their own convictions, handing out Scarlet Letters to everyone, rather than the Biblical text (I’m including myself here). But the question is asked…what do Christians actually stand for?

This is a question every Christian must ask themselves. If Christians are going to make a genuine difference among our neighbors and the nations we must be clear about we are actually represent in the world. Here are a few key realities that we as Christians stand for:

But it is not enough just to stand against something – we must stand for something too.In doing so we offer the world a glimpse into the eternal. We stand for these ideas because Christ stood for us, by loving us while we are broken. Christ embraces those who are weak and transforms us. We stand for these realities knowing that Christ stood for us.
